Traditional teaching of turnout often fails to account for anatomical differences in dancer's bodies. Don't waste time wading through anatomy books that aren't focused on dance, or dance books that aren't focused on turnout. Nowhere else will you find such easy-to-use information specifically designed to help you achieve the best turnout possible while avoiding injury. Packed with scientifically accurate feedback and common-sense advice, Tune up Your Turnout is the definitive guide to getting the best turnout with the least frustration.

Sometimes even highly accomplished dance teachers are unaware of the anatomical principles behind the movements they ask their students to perform. This is particularly true with turn-out. Deborah's book Tune Up Your Turnout really cuts through the mystery and confusion that surrounds turnout, and shows how to analyze it, strengthen it, and improve it using evidence-based techniques.

Thanks! Karen

I found your Dancing Smart newsletter probably 2 years ago and read through all of the archives and continue to follow your work. The newsletter alone flooded me with so much information that I had not yet known. I have been dancing my whole life, mostly ballet, and while I intuitively had a decent understanding of how my body moves, I was clueless about the anatomical and physiological aspects of the dancing body. Embracing this whole new realm of information has improved my dancing immensely, and I know that stumbling upon your newsletters back then was the impetus for my seeking out information. Even better is that I obtained this information before I started teaching ballet. I think it is so important to have a strong foundation in the science of dance when teaching... so that the dancers can enjoy dancing injury-free (it's hard enough without injuries!). The last think I want to do is unknowingly encourage a student to perpetuate bad habits, or to not be able to identify anatomical differences in students that impact how they move or the extent of their turnout (etc). I know that I am still learning, which is great too.
You also introduced me to the 'wonderful world of fascia', as I like to call it... and the pinkie ball. Learning about fascia has improved my flexibility and extensions beyond what I had from just stretching. And your book, Tune Up Your Turnout, is so wonderful. I used to force my turnout and was a turnout "gripper", primarily because I had a teaching who wanted it solid back there when we stood in in our positions. The book truly enabled me to to learn to relax my glutes and work my deeper turnout muscles in my natural range of turnout. This is something that I have passed on to my students.
Basically, thanks to you I have had many "aha!" moments with regards to dancing and teaching.

I have the "Tune Up your Turnout" book by Deborah Vogel. One of the most insightful tips for me that I continue to apply to all my muscles and pass on to my students is that in order for your turnout to improve you first need to release tension. Stretching and strengthening can only happen after that first step is taken. I keep a tennis ball in my dance bag always and my piriformis thanks you!
